The Pilgrims decided to dock in Plymouth instead of making the trek to Virginia because they ran out of beer. The beer, a dietary mainstay of the day, was more sanitary than their water due to the boiling process of brewing. The Pilgrims drank a large amount of this "ships beer," but the alcoholic content is nowhere near what we have today.
