The 3rd World Water Congress, the first to be held in the southern hemisphere, was structured with a wide-ranging and high-quality programme, with around 900 presentations in plenary, platform, poster and workshop sessions. The full spectrum of the global community of water professionals was represented in this unparalleled opportunity to address the key challenges in water and sanitation and to report advances in water and environmental management. Over 650 papers have subsequently been peer-reviewed for publication and this issue comprises 27 papers selected on aspects of industrial wastewaters and their treatment. Papers describe work tackling a wide variety of pollutants (including heavy metals, recalcitrant chemicals and organics) in many industrial settings, from textiles, pulp and paper, and petrochemicals to agro-industries; the technologies (biological and physico-chemical) applied range from advanced oxidation through biodegradation to membrane and sequencing batch reactors. With articles by some of the world?s leading experts, highlighting new research and practical applications, these proceedings are a highly valuable compilation of current developments in the treatment of industrial wastewaters.
