Publisher's Synopsis

The principal aim of this book is to fill the assumptions that most English as a Second Language (ESL), English as a Foreign Language (EFL), or English Language Teaching Materials (ELTM) make; that is, that students have somehow, through years of precollege instruction, mastered the most basic English sentences. If we look at present English Language Teaching Materials (hereafter ELTM) that are in the market-for example, the Headway Series, New Intercom, Spectrum, or others that escape my thoughts-we notice that their content does not provide enough experiences in the form of activities and exercises for students learning English. It is the aim of this book to fill this gap in ELTM. This book can be used as a textbook guided by an EFL teacher and as an independent approach to learning English, since every grammatical point is introduced, explained by examples, and formatted in a flowchart fashion. The book consists of ten units. Each unit contains different grammatical points and exercises with examples, and at the end of each unit, a vocabulary list is provided. The theoretical foundation of the Foundation Grammar Course for Arab Students (hereafter FGCfAS) is based on social critical theory. Namely, the learner's background is an essential component to create a student-centered approach. The culture of the learner is represented with references to the learner's ethnic origins. Moreover, the learner's immediate environment is incorporated into the activities and the learner's first language (L1) background was taken into account when these activities and exercises were designed. Most of the activities presented here have been piloted and tested in three different countries: the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Oman.
