Publisher's Synopsis

When the Department for Education and Employment decided to commit ?4m to the Laptop Initiative for Adult and Community Learning, it was anticipated that there would be a major impact on the use of technology among tutors and organisations. The range and scale of this influence has been dramatic. For many organisations this initiative was the first time that they had worked in adult and community learning with laptops and ICT equipment. For others this resource was an addition to ageing equipment. This report about the initiative describes how the laptops are being used innovatively, creatively and resourcefully in Basic Skills, Outreach and Widening Participation generally. There are examples of models of delivery, looking at what does and does not work. One chapter is devoted to best practice in developing a laptop-based project. Useful skills and strategies for developing outreach programmes using laptops are discussed with an emphasis on the practicalities involved.
