Publisher's Synopsis
Accompanying a year-long exhibition at the University of Kentucky Art Museum, this work explores the distinctiveness of southern landscape painting from the early 19th century through to the 1940s. More than 25 colour reproductions are accompanied by essays on southern art and culture by such contributors as: William W. Freehling, Singletary Professor of Humanities at the University of Kentucky; Jessie Poesch, Professor Emerita of Art History at Tulane University; and J. Richard Gruber, Director of the Odgen Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans. Other contributors discuss the nature of the southern landscape and its impact upon literature and experience.
