Set in a Long Island boarding house during the years of the Depression, Aberration of Starlight has four main characters - Billy Recco, an eager ten-year-old in search of a father; Marie Recco, an attractive divorcee caught between her father and son without a life of her own; John McGrath, old and brutally soured by life, fearful of his daughter's restlessness; and Tom Thebus, a rakish salesman who precipitates the conflict between Marie's hope and her father's wrath. They each form one of four strands of narrative which make up this rich and complex exploration of family, sex and romance while at the same time giving a truthful and sometimes ugly picture of American lower-middle class mores in the thirties.
