Publisher's Synopsis

Combining the reports - "Active Power Factor Control - Requirements and Techniques" (90-0019) and "Analysis of Input Current Harmonics from an AC Supply - Final Report" (90-0399), this report has been produced for members of ERA's Technical Services Scheme.;The first report deals with the requirement placed upon electronic power converter equipment manufacturers, from 1992, to control the input power factor of their product. The draft IEC specification (Draft 77A-48 of IEC 555-2) is discussed together with circuit techniques to meet the requirement. In particular, some of the power factor and harmonic current control integrated circuits are discussed. The results of an evaluation of the Micro Linear ML4812 Power Factor Controller are presented for both a basic circuit and an enhanced version.;The second report details an investigation into the harmonic content of wave forms representative of the input current drawn from the AC mains supply by various typical electronic equipment. Proposed changes to the current version of IEC 555-2, the regulations brought about by the Single European Market are discussed, and techniques enabling the new requirements to be met are considered. Mathematical analysis of the supply current waveforms likely to be drawn is performed. This allows theoretical analysis of circuit designs without breadboarding.;The need for power factor correction circuits has been addressed and suitable topologies discussed. Conclusions are drawn and comparison of the harmonic content of the theoretical waveforms and the harmonics of a diode rectifier with reservoir capacitor are given in appendices. Also available as a 2-volume set with 91-0658D.
