Publisher's Synopsis

Bede Griffith believed the future of the world depended on the marriage of East and West. The story of his life reveals how he transcended the divisions between religions. Though born into a very middle-class Anglican family in 1906 - and taught by C. S. Lewis at Oxford - he became a Roman Catholic and by 1953 was a monk. Invited to found a Benedictine monastery in Southern India in the 1950s, Bede Griffiths gradually built up a religious community of 20 monks, which became an international centre for dialogue and contemplation, attracting people of all ages, nationalities and faiths. His spirituality and his emphasis on meditation hold great appeal for many today who seek God but cannot find him in traditional churches. This extraordinarily gifted and unusual man - revered by many as a sage, prophet and mystic - continues to inspire people all over the globe.
