Publisher's Synopsis
A collection of essays by Tosaka Jun on contemporary philosophy in the early 20th century, including his famous critique of what he was the first to call "the Kyoto School," in addition to his reflections on ideology, materialism, fascism, the philosophy of journalism, Russian philosophy, Hegelian dialectics, and Marxism. The stated purpose of the volume is not to add one more voice to ongoing, abstract philosophical debates but to take up "fundamental, living questions" related to current events. For Tosaka this is the heart of the philosophical vocation and does not rely on received categories to "solve" perceived problems by first locating them in a comprehensive framework of universal concepts. In a word, these essays not only constitute a critique of various philosophies circulating at the time but are also designed to lay out a framework of his own for treating actual social problems in their most concrete form.
