This book reviews in detail the cryogenic technologies used in the European Spallation Source (ESS) laboratory. ESS is an accelerator-driven neutron source designed to provide the world's brightest neutron source when it comes online for user experiments in 2023. The ESS's unique capabilities will both greatly exceed and complement those of today's leading neutron sources, enabling new opportunities for researchers across the spectrum of scientific discovery, including materials and life sciences, energy, environmental technology, cultural heritage and fundamental physics. The total cost of the ESS project is roughly Euro 1.84 billion.
