Darren Clarke's career began a long way from the glamour of the major tournaments, when he worked as a caddie for his father who was a course superintendent. This early experience sparked a passion for the game in the young Ulsterman, and he turned professional in 1990 aged 22. Since then he has enjoyed a brilliant career, playing in five Ryder Cup tournaments for the European team, four of which were on the winning side. He remains one of the only men to beat Tiger Woods in a 36 hole match play final.
A highly dedicated and competitive player, it is his work hard, play hard ethic that has won him friends among his greatest on-course rivals, and he is well known for enjoying post-match drinks with his US counterparts as readily as with his European colleagues.
