This text looks at the issues raised by the increase in women's employment and the consequent greater need for childcare services. Adopting a unique cross-national approach, it focuses on five countries - the UK, the USA, France, Sweden, and East Germany - where the provision of day care differs markedly. Focusing on the child's environment as the central theme the contributors highlight the influence of social context on day care and emphasize the importance of understanding the wide range of factors which mould day care provision.
