Publisher's Synopsis
Once merely conservationists' favorite buzzword, "sustainability" has become the mandate of our times, and designers have taken up the challenge with a dizzying range of innovative forms and materials. Design for a Living World is the companion book to a major touring exhibition that had its debut in spring 2009 at the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York. To encourage people to choose materials that support, rather than squander, fragile ecosystems, exhibition partner The Nature Conservancy commissioned ten international designers-in fields from apparel to housewares to furniture to industry-to invent new uses for sustainably grown, locally harvested materials. This book documents their projects.
