Publisher's Synopsis
Globalization of production, the emergence of new competitors at the global scale, rapid technological change and new organizational responses in production have profound economic and social consequences for localities in Europe. At the same time, the characteristics and dynamics of localities are influencing the ways in which these processes develop and unfold both in Europe and at the global scale. The city is emerging as the prime locality in these interactive processes, the most important consequences of which is that European cities increasingly compete with each other across national boundaries. This book examines the nature and development of this competition and the role which urban policies can and do play in urban success in the new competitive environment. These issues are dealt with both theoretically and through in-depth studies of urban development and policy in ten European cities.
