How do the police deal with crime throughout Europe? How do prosecutorial systems compare with each other? How many offenders get convicted? What sentences are imposed in different countries, and, in the case of custodial sentences, for how long? How many police officers are there in any given country? How many prosecutors? The second edition of the European Sourcebook of Crime and Criminal Justice Statistics contains data for nearly all member states of the Council of Europe. In order to make the reader aware of possible limitations to the comparability of figures, all chapters contain information on offence definitions and recording practices. At present, this is the largest collection on criminal justice and crime-related data covering Europe. The following offences were included in the survey: Total offences, homicide, assault, rape, robbery, theft (of which theft of a motor vehicle, burglary and domestic burglary), drug offences.
