Publisher's Synopsis

Dr William Vesuvius Smith gives a detailed account of his background, and then proceeds to tell the story of the time when he gave four speeches to his local Women's Institute, after being persuaded to by Amelia Cordite - the local village organiser. Having already delivered several speeches recounting his experiences working abroad in the medical field, Dr Smith is now 'let loose' to deliver speeches on any topic. This of course could cause all sorts of issues, and raise many eyebrows. Despite the first speech causing a stir and Dr Smith assuming that he wouldn't be asked to return, the WI request that he should deliver more speeches, and stay afterwards for question-and-answer sessions. Amelia is sincerely grateful, and in turn Dr Smith is grateful to her Alan Cordite, who helps Dr Smith out of a sticky situation. Amelia shows her appreciation in a most unexpected way.
