Publisher's Synopsis

NOVALIS

HENRY OF OFTERDINGEN

Edited by Carol Appleby

This edition of the unfinished novel by Novalis, Henry of Ofterdingen, is translated by Frederick S. Stallknecht & Edward C. Sprague.

Novalis (Friedrich von Hardenberg, 1772-1801) is the most mystical of the German Romantic poets. He is at once the most typical and the most unusual of the German Romantic writers, indeed, of all Romantic poets. His best known work, Hymnen an die Nacht (Hymns To the Night), was published in 1800.

This edition includes a biography of Novalis by the translators, and an introduction to the work of Novalis.
