Publisher's Synopsis

The intense and growing interest in innovative technologies for urban storm drainage is reflected in the steadily growing prestige of the NOVATECH conference series and the record attendance (about 340 participants from 24 countries) at NOVATECH '98 .  Its programme comprised over 130 papers, which focused on innovative methods of sewerage and drainage analysis, stormwater management, and CSO control and treatment. After a rigorous selection process 28 expanded and enhanced papers have been assembled for this special issue that are in themselves of the highest quality and also provide a representative cross-section of the innovative approaches discussed at the conference.  Amongst the topics included here are issues of:  Sustainable development in relation to urban wet-weather flows        Extended characterisation of wet-weather pollution, addressing not just chemical composition, but also treatability        Advances in wet-weather flow modelling (particularly of CSOs and hydrodynamic separators)        Stormwater management, e.g. ponds, swales/ditches, porous pavements and biofiltration techniques        Impacts of wet weather on operation of sewage treatment plants.  The combination of papers dealing with innovative solutions and actual data, of new thinking and intense practicality, make these proceedings essential for any civil, environmental or municipal engineer, regulator, researcher or urban planner interested in wet weather pollution and storm drainage.
