Publisher's Synopsis

The International Working Party for the diagnosis and treatment of carcinoma of the cervix and uterus in developing countries is an informal group of experts - radiotherapists and gynaecologists which was formed in 1972 and is sponsored by WHO and IAEA. Members come from industrialised and developing countries and all have considerable experience in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer of the cervix. The aim of the group is to assist in the diagnosis of early (curable) cases of cancer of the cervix and in their treatment without delay by brachytherapy (using caesium-137, iridium-192 and cobalt-60 instead of radium-227) and modern manual afterloading or remote loading techniques. The ninth meeting of the International Working Party and International Conference on International Strategies for the Eradication of Carcinoma of the Cervix in Developing Areas was held in Calcutta, India, in late January 1987. The meeting was attended by 113 delegates from 17 countries. These proceedings include the papers given at the Calcutta meetings, outline the discussions, and report the conclusions and recommendations of the group which are forwarded to the international agencies and by the members to radiological and oncological associations and departments of health. Subjects of papers and discussions include aetiology of cancer of the cervix, prevention and management, diagnosis and screening, radiotherapy using brachytherapy and teletherapy, manual and remote loading, low dose rate and high dose rate therapy, organisation of services and training of experts.
