Relationships between light and shadows significantly characterize the design of a room, and they determine its particular atmosphere. Many and various techniques of illumination can emphasize certain spatial elements, while allowing others to remain in the dark. The modelling of space is therefore possible through light in all of its available forms: light penetrating from the ceiling, light through stained-glass windows, from narrow slots in the wall, daylight or electric light.
