Publisher's Synopsis
In the summer of 1946, Camilo Jose Cela, winner of the 1989 Nobel prize for literature, set out on a walking tour of the then little explored region of the Alcarria, some forty-five kilometres to the north-east of Madrid. His account of the journey, "Viaje a la Alcarria", published in early 1948, is a classic of modern Spanish literature, at once a powerful documentary of the hungry years of the period, and a personal philosophical and literary statement.;In this edition, the work is studied from four principal viewpoints: the conventions of the genre of travel writing; the tradition of Spanish domestic travel and narration; the socio-political and cultural background of the 1940s in Spain; and the autobiographical and literary dimensions. Detailed background notes are included.
