- 50 great cryptic crosswords - 50 challenging Biblical crosswords Dismissed by the New York Times in 1924 as a 'sinful waste' of 'utterly futile' effort, readers were informed that crosswords would offer them nothing more than 'a primitive form of mental exercise' from which nothing of value could be derived. Since then, sad to say, the Crossword has gone from strength to strength. But it would surely be some consolation to The New New York Times' editor of 1924 that this crossword collection at least helps to extend knowledge of the Bible - surely not a 'sinful' pursuit!
