Maggie Poinsett, a National Geographic photographer, is on vacation at a bed and breakfast in the North Carolina mountains when she meets the ghost of Thomas MacKinlay, a Civil War soldier shot for desertion. Obsessed with saving Thomas, who she has fallen in love with, she steps through a gate into the past and disguises herself as a boy, working as Thomas's photography. assistant so that she can try to save his life.
