Publisher's Synopsis

MULU'S PUB & CAFE in Halifax, is the venue where an El Salvadoran refugee and her Canadian boyfriend meet and discover themselves. Rosa, fled El Salvador for Canada in her youth when the civil war broke out there. But growing up, since, has been challenging, especially when she hallucinates over the assassination of her father. In Canada, she is deeply in love with Don but struggles to identify as Canada's child. The Pub is also a focal point where challenges to immigrant life come out into the open: the suspicion of Arab and Muslim communities; the stereotype of the African; the pressure to stay locked in with one's roots. So, too, debate unfolds about the ugliness of war that has driven people away from their homes-El Salvador, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, the troubled Middle East. The West is no nirvana but neither is the prospect of going back to roots. The end brings on a twist of fate in the couple's journey of love but one which gives credence to the view that for the global migrant, there is no arrival without a sense of departure."
