Publisher's Synopsis
On the MarginEach of the eight chapters consists of a brief introduction in English, followed by selected extracts from Cicero, Pliny, Petronius, as well as other authors and inscriptions, all of which are made readily accessible by glossaries. The book begins by dealing with the family, and then reaches out to the area of the 'other' - those groups on the margin of Roman society: women, children, slaves, freedmen, convicts, gladiators, foreigners and Christians. In addition, there are questions on eachpassage designed to stimulate discussion and reflection on these largely under-examined aspects of Roman life.
