The blitz overshadowed his childhood, but there was plenty of fun to be had for a boy, running wild on the streets of south London. When finally his tenement home was bombed, he was evacuated to Norfolk for a totally different way of life. Leaving school at fourteen, he took a series of jobs, each with their share of hilarity and in 1952 he decided to settle down. He married and, rather to his surprise, joined the Metropolitan Police.
