Harry Cole, whose stories about life on the beat have entertained thousands, describes his own early life. The blitz overshadowed his childhood, but there was plenty of fun to be had for a boy, running wild on the streets of south London. When finally his tenement home was bombed, he was evacuated to Norfolk for a totally different way of life. Leaving school at fourteen, he took a series of jobs, each with their share of hilarity and in 1952 he decided to settle down. He married and, rather to his surprise, joined the Metropolitan Police.
