Publisher's Synopsis

The rapid growth of industry in many parts of the world is increasingly subjecting municipal wastewater treatment systems to toxic and hazardous pollutants which cannot always be successfully treated. In many cases they inhibit conventional biological treatment processes. However, the high organic loads generated by certain industries may, depending on the type of treatment plant involved, have either an adverse or a beneficial effect. It is thus widely accepted that some form of pretreatment programme is essential to cope with these industrial inflows.;The success of any industrial pretreatment programme that aims to control industrial discharges to municipal sewerage systems is directly associated with the participation of all groups involved. The importance and practicality of these issues is discussed in the proceedings documented in this text.
