Publisher's Synopsis

Giovanni, they erected you a monument, but they changed your name; here they call you John. . . . These are the opening lines of a poem addressed to Giovanni Caboto, also known as John Cabot, by Filippo Salvatore, one of the seventeen contributors to Roman Candles an unusually engrossing collection of poems by Canadian poets of Italian birth or background. Their sixty-five poems, expressive of the Italo-Canadian experience, were selected by the talented poet Pier Giorgio Di Cicco, who was born in Arezzo, Italy, in 1949, and raised in Montreal, Baltimore and Toronto. He has published five collections of poetry and, since 1976, has been Associate Editor of Books in Canada.
