Set in the backdrop of the Vietnam War, this captivating novel spanning over two decades follows the intersecting lives of characters in the USA and Vietnam. Rachel is a stubborn and headstrong girl protesting the war, which her brother Paul might be sent off to. Paul himself has a secret he hides, unable to share it with anyone, but living in constant fear. Steve is drafted for that same war and is sent to Vietnam to fight a war he has no belief in. Lien, a young girl supporting the Viet Cong, is fighting against the American troops to free her country. Phuc, her brother, wants to prove himself better than his sister and is willing to do anything for it, even if it means destroying her happiness. The lives of these characters overlap bringing about love, hatred, guilt and decisions that, made by them and for them, have long-lasting consequences.
