IN presenting this little volume to the public, a few words prefatory may not be amiss. Its author does not pretend to have entered fully into the general condition of cc lored society in Philadelphia but has mere ly glanced at some of the chief characteristics, with the design, first, to remove some of the unfounded prejudices from without and secondly, to correct certain abuses which are known to exist among themselves.
