Discussing the origin of the title of her book of poetry, Still Waters of the Heart, Anne Spencer said, "Sometimes people have a tendency to hide their true feelings from those around them. A smile or laugh may hide inner turmoil, like the surface of a still pool of unknown depth." Born in Pennsylvania, Ms. Spencer was raised in Minnesota, where she currently lives. She worked for ten years as a licensed practical nurse and presently owns a cafe in northern Minnesota. The author is a mother of four grown children.
