Publisher's Synopsis

English summary: An important discovery for the history of Etruscan and Mediterranean architecture took place while excavating within the perimeter of the building of the Winged Horses, which dates from the early fourth century BC. Scans targeted and conducted with the most up to date techniques have revealed that, within the foundations of the Temple of the Winged Horses, there were foundations of two archaic temples of the sixth century BC, the second of which was erected during the reign of Servius Tullius and that of Tarquin the Proud. In the book, which is presented as a milestone in the building culture and the religious heritage of the Etruscans, we propose a rational reconstruction of the walls of the archaic temples in a heated debate with Vitruvius, whom in De Architectura defined the composition formulas of this particular kind of buildings. There are numerous connections with other Etruscan temples and the great architecture of Ancient Greece and Sicily.
