Publisher's Synopsis

This video presents the stories of members of The Black Friendly Group, a group of black African and Caribbean adults with learning difficulties, in an innovative and enjoyable way. Together with a supporting booklet, the video outlines the group members' experiences, showing the importance to black people with learning difficulties of learning about and understanding their own history and heritage. It portrays positive images of black people with learning difficulties involved in the group, in the project, and also living their lives in their local community in Lambeth, challenging negative stereotypes and prejudices. Telling it ourselves emphasises the concerns that black people with learning difficulties have about increasing support to family members (especially parent carers) - 'carers are our lifeline'. In particular, it highlights the need for improved information, support, and thinking about what happens as parents get older and find it harder to provide the same levels of support to their adult sons or daughters. It will also be a valuable training tool for those who commission and provide services to this user group and their carers.
