1983 was a disaster for the Labour Party. If the June election was a temporary aberration on the part of the public then there would still be some hope for labour at the next election and beyond. But the real problem was the collapse of Labour's image as a viable alternative government in the years before. This was not the result of Tory or media campaigns, so often given as the excuse for Labour's parlous state; the wounds were self-inflicted and often self-indulgent. Eric Moonman analyses the options now available to Labour and concludes that if Labour is to survive it must alter its policy dramatically on a wide range of issues like owner-occupation and the sale of council houses, proportional representation, race relations and the EEC.
