If universal darkness. Overspreading Europe, would be the inevitable consequence of the success of the coalesced despots, are not every other people of Europe equally interested with those of Spain, in averting so dreadful a calamity? Although theirs happens to be the post of honour, the only difference in their fate would be a slight priority of enslave ment. Or, should we, on the chance that Spain, single-handed, will be more than a match for all the despotic league, lay by, with our hands folded, calmly viewing the contest, and afterwards reap our full share in the advantages of the victory; in selfishness, eeuld any thing be baser, or, in risk, more criminal? However we may admit, that, in the conduct of governments and individuals, a difference, as to time, and mode of interference, may. Be expedient, one thing 15, certain, that that inter ference is the most seasonable, by which the greatest sum of bloodshed, and of misery, may be averted.
