Publisher's Synopsis

William Gaze was born in 1801 in the small rural village of Churchdown Gloucestershire. In 1829 he became indentured to Thomas Peel, who set sail with a ship load of pioneer settlers to the newly founded Swan River Colony in Western Australia. Enduring hardships of unbelievable description he took his employer to court for non payment of wages and was freed of his indentures. In 1832, whilst preparing his plot of land for sowing, William was attacked by natives and brutally killed. 'The Indentured Man' tells the story of William Gaze's short but tragic life, set against the background of the Industrial Revolution and an individual's greed to exploit new land.
