Publisher's Synopsis

This volume consists of documents dated from September 1839 through January 1841. The volume highlights the effort to build up Nauvoo, Illinois--the Saints' new gathering place--and settlements across the Mississippi River in Iowa Territory. Documents in this volume also reveal the attempts to obtain redress from the federal government for the Saints' expulsion from and loss of property in Missouri, attempts that included Joseph Smith and others traveling to Washington DC to meet with President Martin Van Buren and work with the Illinois congressional delegation to submit a memorial to Congress.
