I mention this in order to anticipate any disappoint ment, which may, not unnaturally, be felt by my readers owing to the absence of copious quotations from letters; and I can only express the hope that the delineation attempted in the following pages, even with this limitation, may serve to recall the chief features of his long and varied life.
