The plant baby and its friends is the outcome of some years of happy experience in the schoolroom with a ?ock of country children. The need was felt of attractive reading matter to supplement the natural-science work being performed by the classes. It is easier to interest children in simple stories about Nature than in the technical treatment of the regular schoolbook; and the author believes that the science story book, conscientiously prepared with accuracy and skill, should precede the more formal text-book on the same subject, up to which it will naturally lead.
