This study examines examples of literary art from different historical periods, to identify in them the element of the visual; to see how this is paralleled and extended in the illustrations of the works; and to explore analogies to these images from both past and present. It discusses setting, time, character, the text, and the role of illustration. It provides a sense of historical development, of the permanency of challenge of representing what is seen and experienced in words and images, and of the dynamism in the relationship between text and image which is important in the technological and aesthetic developments of cinema, television and video-arts.
