LaTonya So was born in Whiteville, North Carolina in 1978 to a mother who unfortunately became a drug addict. The low income neighborhood that she and her family lived had long been viewed as the local ghetto. She experienced what most low income children experience growing up in an environment characterized by the illegal drugs, violence, crime, shame and abuse commonly associated with daily survival in the ghetto. She learned as a teenager that she was a child of adultery as a result of a relationship her mother had with a white man. During her first encounter with her biological father at the age of 14, she sat quietly as he described the relationship with her mother as a one night stand with a "colored girl" with a Coke-bottle figure. In her words, "When you are born in the ghetto, it usually leads to poor decisions, challenged relationships, abuse of some type and usually results in a series of unfortunate circumstances." In her story she bravely and entertainingly shares how she discovered the power to control circumstances rather than allowing them to control her. In 1998, she gave birth to her first child and began to see life through the eyes of a mother. Today, she and her husband now have three beautiful children and live in an upscale suburban neighborhood. She states that "with each child my motherly instinct to protect, teach and love became enormous."
