The traditional cottage industry of framework knitting had collapsed. Families could no longer afford to put food on the table. The Broughtons were forced to leave their home village of Gilmorton, in Leicestershire, to look for work. In Croydon the Broughtons met the Nortons and together their lives took another turn.
