During the First Caliphate (630 - 1185 AD), Islamists forced their beliefs and their system of governmental totalitarianism and religious dominance, on the peoples of the Iberian Peninsula and southeastern Europe. These Muslims were driven out during the Crusades, back into northern Africa and the Middle East.
