Publisher's Synopsis

The third volume in the series of Vincent Van Gogh drawings in the Van Gogh Museum features his Antwerp and Paris works. At the end of November 1885, Van Gogh went to Antwerp, where he attended lessons in drawing from plaster casts of classical statues at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten. He was also an active member of drawing clubs. At the beginning of March 1886, Van Gogh then moved to Paris, where he lived with his brother Theo in the vibrant artists' quarter of Montmartre. The next two years were extremely important to his development as an artist. He met fellow artists and art dealers, and observed changes in French painting at first hand. While a pupil in the studio of Fernand Cormon, he came into contact with other artists such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Emile Bernard. He continued to commit his surroundings to paper, as he had in Antwerp. The catalogue reproduces and discusses over one hundred drawings and discusses their technique, subject, exhibition history and provenance. An extensive introduction examines Van Gogh's artistic development, and looks at questions of dating and attribution.
