The words, terms, and phrases explained in these pages were obtained chie?y from the 227 separate works on the game of checkers that have been printed in English in the period of a little more than a century and a half, extending from 1756 to the present time. Each magazine, regardless of the number of volumes issued, is here counted as one work. The sources of information are thus more extensive than the mere mention of 227 works would indicate.
