From the dawn of the 20th century until World War II, members of a Jewish family in Trieste experienced first-hand great historical events - the birth of Freudian psychoanalysis, World War I, the end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Fascism. In Voices From a Time, the family members take turns to describe the family's tumultuous history. The backdrop to the personal and historical recallings contains the radiant and mundane world of fin de siecle society, the atmosphere of Jewish Trieste, the irredentist movement and the squalor of Italian Fascism.
