Publisher's Synopsis

The compilers of this volume draw upon the memories of 157 German witnesses - from SS men to concentration-camp victims, from teenage Nazis to resistance activists. The material contained in this book is divided chronologically into four sections, each of which is prefaced by an historical note. In the epilogue, the compilers argue that National Socialism owed its origins to German need and to German problems, that hindsight alone makes it easy to blame the Germans for embracing the positive virtues of Nazism and that the strength of the generation of Germans must also be measured by the way that they rebuilt two Germanies after the war.
