Publisher's Synopsis

Words, paintings, music, Winterreise records the responses of an artist, an opera singer and a pianist to Franz Schubert's 'Die Winterreise', the song cycle based on the poems of Wilhelm Muller which he wrote just before his death almost two hundred years ago. Winterreise is a distinctive cross-media response to Schubert's moving song sequence. The specially bound book comprises twenty-three paintings by Pip Woolf facing English translations of the poems of Wilhelm Muller, which Schubert so memorably set to music. These striking abstract interpretations of Muller's sad narrative are followed by the unique music score, annotated by Robert Lloyd, whose performance of the songs with pianist Julius Drake is captured on a CD recorded especially for the book. This collaboration of the visual, literary and musical will delight all those with an interest in the arts, and especially in relationships across form, language and time. The edition features 23 colour images, score, and music CD.Pip Woolf is an artist based in Llangynidr, Wales. Her solo exhibitions include 'Marking a Point' at the Oriel Coliseum, Aberystwyth (2007) and 'Re-presenting Wool' at the National Museums and Galleries of Wales, Cardiff (2003).
