The idea for this issue of the "State of the Art Reviews: Occupational Medicine" series had its origins in a research project called "Safety and Susceptibility" which was developed in response to the highly publicized genetic testing of workers by a few major employers in the early 1980s. Although several recent articles have approached topics which owe their inception to this early concept, no single monograph has focused entirely on worker fitness and risk evaluations.;This volume is intended to fill the gap by reviewing what is known about prediction and modification of worker fitness and risk. The editors provide a practical guide to clinicians for dealing with common clinical presentations and an approach to decision-making that will be useful as new situations arise.
