The author emphasizes that this insensitivity to the welfare of future generations can lead to apocalyptic conditions of dearth of water and food, and the rage of our descendants. His philosophy is a synthesis of a deep ecological sensibility grounded in Native American environmental consciousness and the classical Greek concept that individual freedom is an integral part of collective freedom. This base of freedom was the basis of Athenian democracy. Only thus "we can repay any kind of debt that for so many years we have run up against ourselves and the next generations."
